What is at stake for the future of Chinese fashion?

M on the Bund and ESSCA School of Management are honored to invite Dr Wessie Ling and Prof. Simona Segre Reinach, editors of the book Fashion in Multiple China: Chinese Styles in the Transglobal Landscape, eds. Wessie Ling and Simona Segre Reinach (Bloomsbury/IB Tauris, 2018)

On the occasion of their visit to Shanghai for their book launch, we will have a chance to engage with the editors in a conversation about Chinese fashion, as it develops in Mainland China and abroad. The interdisciplinary approach of this book, which gathers 13 fashion experts, enables the reader to understand a multi-faceted phenomenon, with an increasing role, as China invests in its creative economy, and along the One Belt One Road.


Editors and Speakers:

Dr. Wessie Ling is a Reader in Fashion Studies at Northumbria University and a practising visual artist. She is the author of Fusionable Cheongsam and has written in journals such as Visual Anthropology and guest edited Modern Italy and ZoneModa Journal. She was ASEAN Research Fellow at Mahidol University (2018) and Rita Boland Fellow (2018/9) at the National Museum of World Cultures. Her artworks have been exhibited at OVADA in Oxford, at the Brunei Gallery, SOAS, and at the Victoria & Albert Museum among others.www.wessieling.com



Simona Segre Reinach is associate professor of Fashion Studies at Bologna University. She has written extensively on fashion from a global perspective and she co-edited Fashion in Multiple Chinas: Chinese Styles in the Transglobal Landscape.. She sits on the editorial boards of academic journals as Fashion Theory, Critical Studies in Fashion and Beauty, The International Journal of Fashion Studies, Anthem Studies in Fashion, Dress and Visual Culture, China Matters (Leuven University Press). She is Editor of Zonemoda Journal.

Dr Sabine Ichikawa, Dr Sabine Ichikawa, Director of the Luxury & Innovation Institute, Essca School of Management. She has worked in the fashion industry as a designer and marketer in several countries before embracing academia. Today as a business historian she does comparative research on Asian fashion and creative industries. She runs a Master in EU-Asia Luxury Marketing in ESSCA School of Management, in Shanghai.

After 23 years serving in one of Shanghai’s most iconic neighbourhoods, it is bittersweet for us to announce the official closing of M on the Bund and Glam dining lounge & bar on 15 February, 2022.


Over the years, we have served over three million guests across local and worldwide communities, among them some influential and prominent names. With your support, we have become more than a restaurant of excellent food and warm hospitality, but also a platform where like-minded people gather and connect. We are proud of the numerous initiatives we have founded and supported and humbled by the awards we have received, for they have made us one of the city’s most distinguished dining establishments.

It has been a tremendous pleasure for us to serve the community over the past two decades, and we owe an immense debt of gratitude to everyone who has loved our restaurants and supported our businesses. Your trust and loyal patronage have allowed us to grow and mature. Therefore, while we are sad to depart, we are more than grateful for the moments spent with you, and we hope your time with us has left you with nothing but happy and indelible memories.

As we bid our final goodbye, we would like to create a memory photo album of stories and good times. We kindly invite anyone wishing to share their memorable moments with us by sending photos to [email protected], or bring them along when you visit.

For those who would like to send their farewell in person, our restaurants will remain in full operation until the closing date, and we would definitely love to see you again. Please make all reservations via our website, Chope and Dianping.
