Author Biography

Karoline Kan was born in Tianjin. She is a writer and journalist, writing about Chinese people’s lives in a society shaped by a changing culture, economy, and politics. She has worked at That’s Beijing magazine, Radio France International, and The New York Times. Karoline’s debut work of non-fiction, Under Red Skies will be published in English in 2018 by Hachette USA. It will be the the first English-language memoir from a Chinese millennial to be published in America.

Under Red Skies is an examination of the generational bonds and divisions of the author’s family and the panoramic effects of China’s changing societal norms and fast-growing economy, where some succeed and others are destined to fail. it’s a book about the author’s family, herself and what it means to be a Chinese millennial. Under Red Skies shows the delicate human faces behind the cold economic figures and classificatory terms; to reveal the emotions, choices, and compromise; courage, love and hope that Chinese youth share with young people the world over.
