Michael Brooks presents the story of sixteenth century polymath Jerome Cardano. Born out of wedlock to a lawyer and a brothel keeper, Cardano defied poverty and tragedy to become an astrologer and physician to kings, emperors and popes. But, above all else, he was a gifted thinker whose love of mathematics led him to lay down the foundations for modern physics.
In this talk, Brooks will explore Cardano’s peculiar life story and just why he deserves our attention so many centuries after his death. This inveterate gambler, inventor and chancer was plagued by demons and anxieties, but, like his contemporary Nostradamus, his pronouncements and worldview can still resonate today.
