Olivia discusses her experience of China through the prism of love, marriage and the pre-wedding photo industry and the need for story building with the risk of a colonial voice overwhelming a uniquely Chinese cultural phenomenon.

Author Biography

Olivia Martin-McGuire is an Australian documentary filmmaker/ photographer based in HongKong. She has recently directed a feature film documentary, ChinaLove, for ABC Arts, which premiered at the Sydney Film Festival and internationally at DOCNYC, funded by Screen Australia. It is now travelling on the international festival circuit. The photo series from this project was featured in TIME Magazine Lightbox, The Guardian and VICE. A photobook from the series has been published by MediaStockade. She has exhibited throughout Australia and China in galleries, museums and photo festivals. She is part of a group of photo and video journalists in China called the Eyes On China project. She is currently working on new hybrid documentary projects and a TV series in China.

With her feature-film, ChinaLove, screening across Australia and at film festivals around the world, a photo exhibition series of the same name in Sydney and Kaohsiung and an upcoming book of her work, Olivia Martin-McGuire will talk about her experience of China through the prism of love, marriage and the pre-wedding photo industry. Olivia will discuss her own approach as a filmmaker and photographer, balancing the need of building story with the risk of a colonial voice overwhelming a uniquely Chinese cultural phenomenon. Olivia Martin-McGuire is an Australian documentary filmmaker/ photographer based in Hong Kong. She recently directed the feature-film documentary, ChinaLove, for ABC Television / Screen Australia. It premiered at Sydney Film Festival and internationally at DOCNYC – and is screening regularly on the international festival circuit. The photo series from this project was featured in TIME, The Guardian and VICE. A photobook from the series is published by Media Stockade.

Olivia has exhibited throughout Australia and China in galleries, museums and photo festivals. She is part of a group of photo and video journalists called Eyes On China, and currently developing several new hybrid documentary projects and a television series in China.
